Choosing A Blogging Platform

< Back

Ok, so you’ve decided you want to start a blog. The next big question is HOW do you create a blog?

The world of blogging has transformed since its inception twenty years ago with a host of online companies offering ‘blogging platforms’ specifically designed to make the process of creating and running a blog as effortless as possible. But which one do you choose?!

Well, I suggest you start with taking a look at the three most popular options – Tumblr, Blogger and WordPress.

I’ve included a brief description of each below with links to other useful information. Over time I’ll be adding numerous tutorials about how to get the most out of each platform.

Tumblr

Tumblr is one of the simplest ways to start blogging and falls into the category of ‘micro blogging’ as it gives you the ability to easily publish blogs containing short ‘micro’ posts. Think of it as a bit like Twitter without the 140 character limit.

Tumblr has social media at its heart and was designed from the outset to integrate easily with other social media services such as Twitter and Facebook.

Creating a Tumblr blog is FREE and very straightforward. You can customise the look of your blog by choosing one of the various themes available and tweaking it to add your own personal touch. The level of customisation and available features is quite limited compared to say WordPress but that’s a huge part of the appeal for many of those new to blogging. The features that are available though are well thought out and may be all you will ever need!

You can publish short posts of text, photos, videos, audio, quotes and links to your Tumblr blog with ease and it’s also possible to ‘reblog’ a Tumblr post published on another Tumblr blog with the click of a mouse. ‘Reblogging’ and liking content from other Tumblr users is very much at the core of Tumblr’s success.

If you only want to share the occasional update, photo or video then Tumblr is probably your best option.

Blogger

Originally launched in 1999 Blogger helped popularise blogging bringing it into the mainstream. Google bought the service in 2003 so if you have a gmail account you will automatically possess a Blogger account. Blogger will host your blog for FREE on BlogSpot.com.

Setting up a blog on Blogger is a breeze. Simply create your Blogger account, name your blog and choose a template. Templates control the look and feel of your blog. There is a wide selection of templates available although many are pretty basic. You can switch between templates at any point. You can also customise and create your own template but this will require advanced knowledge of CSS and web design.

You can change the arrangement of the elements within a template by using the simple ‘drag and drop’ editor. There are a few extra elements you can add too such as link lists, titles and banners etc.

Creating blog posts is done via a basic WYSIWIG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. There’s also an HTML tab in case you feel up to doing a little more advanced editing.

If you are new to blogging and see yourself adding a range of content on a regular basis then Blogger is an excellent place to start. Offering more flexibility than Tumblr without bamboozling you with too many features, Blogger is an excellent choice for the novice.

But beware! If you fall in love with blogging as much as I have you may soon be wishing for more flexibility and control.

Wordpress

Wordpress is probably the most powerful blogging and content management system (CMS) in existence today.

Recent surveys have shown that over 20% of all websites on the web are powered by WordPress. That’s pretty impressive! Pop over to the WordPress site showcase and you’ll find a huge selection of examples showing you exactly what’s possible.

But what makes it so popular? Firstly, as with Tumblr and Blogger, it’s FREE and we all love something for free don’t we?!

Secondly, it has the power and flexibility to grow with you as your blogging confidence and ambitions grow. As far as I’m aware no other blogging platform offers the flexibility and plethora of features and plugins offered by WordPress and its community.

The core WordPress system offers you all the basic features you need to start blogging in no time at all. Adding blog posts, static pages, photo galleries, videos and audio is all straightforward. Powerful and intuitive formatting options will help you make your blog look slick and professional too.

One of the most exciting features of WordPress is its ‘Plugins’. Plugins are computer programmes that seamlessly bolt on to the core WordPress system adding new features and functionality when you need them. This is great for the novice as you can keep everything nice and simple when you start on your blogging journey and then experiment and add extra elements to your blog as your confidence grows. The plugins integrate seamlessly into the WordPress dashboard so once you’ve mastered the layout of the core WordPress dashboard newly added plugins should be a doddle to use too.

You’ll also find thousands of template or ‘theme’ options too. Each have their own customisable options allowing you to make your blog look totally unique with little or no coding required.

WordPress can be downloaded for self-hosted installations from WordPress.org or it can be used as a hosted service (like Tumblr and Blogger) via WordPress.com

Whether you are a complete novice or an experienced web author you will undoubtedly find a WordPress solution that will work for you. If you are looking for an option that will grow with you and offer almost unlimited options and flexibility then WordPress should be top of your list.
